Chapter 2: The Folder on the Gift Table

The room went completely still.

Every guest turned to look.

Two little ones — a boy and a girl, no older than three — had their arms wrapped around my waist, faces buried against me, calling me Mummy like it was the most natural word in the world.

Because to them, it was.

Daniel took one step forward.

Then stopped.

"Where did they come from?" someone whispered behind me.

I looked down at the children.

My hands were shaking, but I held them close.

Then I looked straight at Daniel.

He couldn't speak.

His mouth opened, then closed again.

Vanessa's voice cut through the silence first.

"Daniel." Her voice was low and very careful.

"Who are these children?"

He still said nothing.

That's when an older woman stepped out from the hallway behind me.

She had driven four hours to be here today.

I hadn't planned this.

I hadn't planned any of it.

She placed a folder on the gift table without a word.

Daniel's eyes went to the folder.

Then to me.

Then back to the folder.

"You need to tell her," I said quietly.

"Or I will."

Vanessa looked at the folder.

Then at her husband.

"Daniel." Her voice cracked this time.

"What is in that folder?"

What Daniel had been hiding didn't just change that room — it changed everything.
