Chapter 2: The Account in Diane’s Name

I thought that Father’s Day had exposed everything.
I was wrong.
Three months later, Jared came to my house carrying a bank envelope.
His hands were shaking.
“Dad, we didn’t recover all the money.”
“How much is missing?”
“Sixty-four thousand dollars.”
I stared at him.
“Where did it go?”
“That’s the problem.
Lauren’s company wasn’t the final destination.”
He placed a statement on the table.
Eight transfers had been sent to another account before the bank froze the assets.
“Who owns it?” I asked.
Jared pointed to the name.
Diane Blake.
My wife had been gone for ten years.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered.
“Someone opened an account using Mom’s identity,” Jared said.
“And Lauren refuses to explain why.”
Then my phone rang.
“Mr.
Blake?” a woman asked.
“My name is Rebecca Shaw.
I handled Lauren’s private accounts.”
Jared put the call on speaker.
“What do you want?” he demanded.
“To tell Oscar the truth,” she replied.
“Lauren wasn’t working alone.”
“Who helped her?”
The woman hesitated.
Then she said a name that made Jared drop the bank statement.
