Chapter 4: Everything She Said Before the Ambulance Arrived

The paramedics arrived in eleven minutes.
Daniel knew because he watched the clock on the wall the entire time, standing in the doorway of the storage room so Vanessa could not leave and Claire could not be left alone.
In those eleven minutes, Vanessa talked.
She talked the way people talk when they realize the silence is no longer protecting them — fast, layered, each sentence designed to replace the last one.
"She came back without warning.
You were in Germany, Daniel.
She showed up at the door at two in the morning and she was not well.
She was saying things that didn't make sense.
I was scared for Lily."
Daniel said nothing.
"I tried to call you.
You weren't answering.
I made a decision.
I know it looks bad, but I made a decision to keep Lily safe until you came home."
"You built a wall," Daniel said.
"I had the door installed first.
The wall came later because Lily kept going to the room and I didn't want her to—"
"You built a wall around my wife and told my daughter her mother was gone."
Vanessa's mouth closed.
"Lily has been asking me for four months where her mother is." His voice was very quiet.
"I told her I didn't know.
I thought Claire had left.
I thought she'd had another episode and run.
I spent four months believing that." He looked at Vanessa directly.
"You let me believe that."
"I was going to tell you.
When the time was right.
When things had settled."
"When things had settled." He repeated it without expression.
"She has a bruise on her face, Vanessa."
"She fell."
"She fell."
"She was disoriented when I first put her in there.
She—"
"I'm going to stop you." Daniel held up one hand.
"I'm going to stop you right there, because every word you say right now is going to be repeated to the police.
So I would think very carefully."
Vanessa went still.
Then something changed in her face.
The performance of concern dropped away and what was underneath it was harder and colder and far more familiar than Daniel wanted to admit.
"You want to talk about what gets repeated to police?" she said.
"Let's talk about that.
Let's talk about where Claire was for the three months before she came back.
Let's talk about what she told me she'd been doing.
Let's talk about the state she was in when she arrived — because I have photographs, Daniel.
I took photographs that night.
And they tell a very different story than the one you think you're standing in."
The ambulance pulled into the drive.
Blue light swept through the window across the wall.
"Whatever you have," Daniel said, "you're going to need it."
He walked out to meet the paramedics.
He did not look back.
But as he led them down the hall, he heard Vanessa behind him, her voice carrying just far enough to reach him.
"Ask her where she was, Daniel.
Ask her what she was running from when she came back.
Ask her why she made me promise not to tell you."
He kept walking.
The paramedics moved past him into the storage room.
He stood in the hallway and pressed his back against the wall and stared at the ceiling and tried to hold the shape of what he knew — what he was certain of — against the thing Vanessa had just dropped into the room like a match.
Claire had made Vanessa promise something.
May you like
And Vanessa had kept it.
Until now.
