Chapter 2: She Was Smiling Wrong

Nora didn't answer.
She pressed her back against the wall, one hand covering her cheek, eyes darting toward the door.
"Nora." Daniel's voice dropped low.
"What was in that cup?"
Silence.
Lily was still shaking.
Daniel knelt down and pulled her close.
"Baby.
How did you know?"
Lily's small voice barely came out.
"I saw her.
Last night.
She put something in the little bottle.
She said it was for making you sleep.
But she was smiling, Daddy.
She was smiling wrong."
Daniel stood up slowly.
He walked to the kitchen counter.
Behind the fruit bowl — a small brown glass bottle.
No label.
His hand was steady when he picked it up.
His face was not.
"Where did you get this?"
Nora finally spoke.
"You don't understand.
You were going to leave me.
You were going to take everything—"
"I was going to leave you." Daniel repeated it quietly.
"So you decided Lily should grow up without a father."
Nora's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed on the table.
He glanced at the screen.
One name.
A name Nora recognized immediately.
Her face changed in a way that had nothing to do with fear of Daniel.
It had everything to do with what that person already knew.
