Chapter 1: The Day Everything Broke

"DADDY, PLEASE DON'T LET HER THROW ME OUT!" My five-year-old daughter's terrified screams shattered the silence of our mansion on the very day I was supposed to marry the woman I loved.

But when I discovered what my fiancée was desperately trying to take from my little girl, I realized her cruelty was hiding something far more sinister.

My name is Daniel, and I was halfway down our grand staircase when Lily's desperate cries stopped me cold.

Below me, my daughter stood trembling in the marble foyer, tears soaking her cheeks as she clutched a tiny floral handbag against her chest.

"Daddy, she says I don't belong here!" Lily sobbed, her little voice breaking.

"She told me to go away!"

Across the room stood Victoria, my beautiful bride-to-be, dressed in a shimmering white satin wedding gown.

Beneath the crystal chandelier, she looked like a princess, but the words coming from her mouth made my bl00d run cold.

"Stop that ridiculous crying!" Victoria snapped, pointing toward the enormous front doors.

"Take your stupid little bag and get out.

Nobody invited you into my life!"

My daughter was only five years old, and this was the only home she had ever known.

Watching her stand there, too frightened to move, I felt something inside me break.

"STEP AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER."

Victoria spun around, her face draining of color when she spotted me on the staircase.

"Daniel!

Honey, this isn't what it looks like!"

I descended slowly, gripping the polished railing to steady my anger.

Every step brought me closer to the woman I had trusted with my daughter's happiness.

When I reached the foyer, I placed myself between Victoria and Lily.

"She's five years old, Victoria, and this is HER home."

"Daniel, you're misunderstanding everything," Victoria insisted, smoothing her wedding gown with trembling fingers.

"I was only trying to teach her some manners."

My eyes searched her face, looking for even a trace of regret.

Instead, I noticed something strange: Victoria couldn't stop glancing past me.

At first, I thought she was watching Lily.

Then I realized she was staring at the handbag.

The little floral purse looked completely ordinary, something Lily might have chosen because she loved the pink flowers.

Yet my daughter held it so tightly that her tiny knuckles had turned white.

"Victoria," I said quietly, "why were you trying to make Lily leave?"

"I already explained!"

"No," I replied, watching her expression shift.

"You wanted her gone, but there's something else you wanted her to leave behind, isn't there?"

For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely frightened.

"Daniel, please," she whispered.

I crouched beside Lily, gently wiping the tears from her cheeks.

"Sweetheart, Daddy's here now, and nobody is sending you anywhere."

Lily threw one arm around my neck while keeping the handbag pressed against her body.

Her little heart was pounding so hard I could feel it through her dress.

"Baby," I whispered, "why does Victoria want your purse?"

Before Lily could answer, Victoria lunged forward.

"DANIEL, DON'T LET HER OPEN THAT!"

I immediately stood and blocked Victoria's path, stunned by the panic in her voice.

My fiancée's perfect composure had vanished, and her eyes were locked on that tiny bag.

Whatever she was hiding, my daughter was holding it.

I turned toward Lily and extended my hand.

"Sweetheart, open your purse for Daddy."

Victoria's face went deadly pale.

And as Lily's trembling fingers reached for the little metal clasp, Victoria suddenly screamed, "WAIT!

THERE'S SOMETHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!"
