Nobody moved.
Aaliyah held the phone out like it was a weapon.
Vivian's voice came through the speaker, calm and cold.
"Put me on with Daniel."
Daniel's face went white.
"How does she know I'm here?" he whispered.
Marcus grabbed the phone.
"Where is my father?"
Silence.
Then Vivian said, "Ask your mother what she did with the letter he left her."
Every head in the room turned to me.
I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.
There was a letter.
There had always been a letter.
I had kept it for twenty-three years because opening it terrified me.
I never told the boys.
I never told anyone.
"What letter?" Marcus said, his voice dropping to something I had never heard from him before.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You hid something from us."
"I was trying to protect you—"
"From what?" Marcus cut me off.
Aaliyah smiled for the first time since the camera was found.
That smile told me everything.
She already knew about the letter.
She had known before the wedding.
Before any of this.
Which meant someone had told her.
Someone who had been inside this family long before Aaliyah ever arrived.
Then Daniel's phone lit up.
A message.
No name.
Just four words.
