Chapter 2: The Envelope in My Purse

Daniel unzipped my purse while his mother watched with a satisfied smile.
“Go on,” she said.
“Show everyone what she took.”
My hands trembled, but I refused to beg.
“You know I didn’t take anything, Daniel.”
He pulled out my wallet, keys, and phone.
Then his fingers closed around a sealed envelope I had never seen before.
“What is this?” he demanded.
Before I could answer, my phone lit up on the table.
A message from my father appeared across the screen:
LET HIM OPEN IT.
AND WHATEVER HAPPENS, DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM.
Daniel read the message, and the color drained from his face.
His mother snatched the envelope.
“Another one of her family’s tricks.”
“No,” Daniel whispered, staring at the name printed beneath the seal.
“This came from our family attorney.”
The laughter around us stopped.
Then the ballroom doors opened, and a gray-haired man carrying a thick folder stepped inside.
“Daniel,” he called, “before you open that envelope, you should know your wife’s father has owned this entire property for three years—and tonight, he gave me permission to reveal why.”
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
“What have you done?” he asked.
But the attorney’s next words were meant for Daniel’s mother.
