Chapter 2: The Envelope She Carried All Evening

Part 2 👇

We made it to the parking lot before Ryan came after us.

"You embarrassed me in front of my entire family," he said, grabbing my arm.

I pulled free.

"Your mother called mine a servant."

"She was joking."

My brother stepped between us.

"Walk away, Ryan."

Ryan looked at him, then at me.

"If you leave right now, don't bother coming back."

I looked at the man I had been married to for eleven years.

"Then I won't come back."

That night, Mom sat at my kitchen table with a cup of tea.

She hadn't said much since we left.

Then she reached into her cardigan pocket and placed a folded envelope on the table.

"Diane gave me this before dinner," she said quietly.

"I didn't want to ruin the evening."

I opened it.

It was a check.

Fifty dollars.

And a note in Diane's handwriting.

*"For your trouble.

Now you don't have to pretend we're family."*

My hands were shaking.

But what I found on the back of that note stopped me completely.

It was a date.

And a name I recognized.

A name that changed everything I thought I knew about my marriage.
