Chapter 2: The Easiest Lie She Ever Told
Vanessa started small.
A missed pickup here.
A forgotten lunch there.
Little things she made sure Graham noticed.
"She was forty minutes late again," Vanessa told him one evening, her voice soft with concern.
"Maisie was sitting on the front step alone.
She didn't even cry.
That's what worries me, Graham.
She's used to it."
Graham said nothing.
But Vanessa saw it — the doubt moving across his face like a shadow.
Then she worked on Maisie.
"Your mummy has a new boyfriend," she whispered one afternoon, smoothing the little girl's hair.
"She's very busy now.
But we love you here.
You know that, don't you?"
Maisie looked up at her with those wide, serious eyes.
"Does Mummy know I'm here?"
Vanessa smiled.
"Of course she does, sweetheart."
It was the easiest lie she had ever told.
By the third month, Graham had contacted a solicitor.
By the fourth, Naomi received a letter she had to read three times before she understood what it meant.
They were applying for full custody of Maisie.
Naomi's hands were shaking when she called her sister.
"They're saying I abandoned her.
Graham is saying I abandoned my own daughter."
Then her sister said something that made Naomi go completely still.
"Naomi…
Maisie called Vanessa 'Mum' last week.
I heard it myself."
