The voicemail kept playing.
Sofia's voice was steady, but only barely.
"I didn't leave.
I was taken out of that house the same night Bellamy told you I was gone.
He said if I contacted you, you would be the one who paid for it.
I believed him.
I'm sorry, Vince.
I'm so sorry."
Nobody moved.
Then Charles Bellamy laughed.
It was a short, controlled sound.
The kind a man makes when he has already planned for the worst.
"Mr.
Moretti.
That recording could be from anyone.
A woman who sounds similar.
An old audio file.
You cannot seriously be—"
"Be quiet."
Vincent's voice was so flat it silenced the room faster than a shout would have.
He looked at Emily.
"How long has your mother had this phone?"
Emily glanced at Grace.
Grace's eyes were closed.
"I don't know," Emily said.
"But there's more than one message."
Isabella moved toward the table.
"Vincent, darling, this is clearly some kind of manipulation.
The child doesn't understand what she's—"
"Don't touch that phone."
Isabella stopped.
Her hand was still reaching toward Emily.
And for the first time all evening, something crossed her face that had nothing to do with elegance.
It looked like fear.
Then Dominic said, very quietly, "Charles.
The night Sofia disappeared.
You were the one who told us she was already gone when you arrived."
Charles said nothing.
But his hand moved toward his jacket pocket.
