Chapter 2: What He Put in the Warm Milk

**PART 2**

Tobias reached into his jacket and pulled out a small waterproof case.

Inside was a folded lab report.

"I had your bl0od tested six months ago," he said.

"Without telling you."

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the paper.

"What is this?"

"Garrett has been adding something to your warm milk every night." Tobias's voice didn't waver.

"A compound that causes gradual organ damage.

Slow enough that no doctor would connect it to anything."

The paper dropped from my fingers.

"He was p0isoning me."

"For at least two years.

The shipyard transfer requires your signature — or your d3ath certificate."

I couldn't speak.

Three years of warm milk.

Every single night.

Him standing in the kitchen doorway, watching me drink it, smiling.

*Because I love you.

You work too hard.*

"Why didn't you tell me?" I finally whispered.

"Because I needed proof.

And because the moment Garrett knew you were suspicious, you'd be in that river a year earlier."

He took the report back and tucked it away.

"There's something else." He hesitated for the first time.

"Penelope didn't just meet Garrett behind your back."

He looked at me.

"She's the one who gave him the compound."

The cold I felt had nothing to do with the river.
