Chapter 2: Someone Already Waiting

They arrived at nine in the morning.
Nancy walked through the door first.
She stopped when she saw him standing in the hallway — my attorney, Marcus Webb, holding a folder.
"Who is this?" she demanded.
"Someone who needs to speak with you before you bring a single box inside," I said.
Krista looked at Pete.
Pete looked at the floor.
Marcus spoke calmly.
"This property is solely owned by your daughter.
Any attempt to occupy it without her written consent may constitute unlawful entry.
I'd advise you to listen carefully."
Nancy's face went red.
"This is family.
You don't lawyer up against family."
"You ordered moving boxes to my address," I said.
"You copied Pete on the storage contract.
You called me eight days after I gave birth and told me to leave my own home.
You made this a legal matter.
Not me."
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
That's when Krista stepped forward — and what she said made my stomach drop.
"She didn't plan this alone," Krista whispered.
"There's something you don't know yet.
About the house.
About how Mom found out you bought it."
I looked at my sister.
"What are you saying?"
She glanced at Pete.
Then looked away.
And Pete quietly reached into his jacket pocket.
