Chapter 2: The Letter He Tried to Hide

“Are you our daddy?”

Marcus gripped the doorframe.

His fiancée slowly released his arm.

“Answer her,” I said.

Marcus stared at Olivia.

“This is impossible.

You told me there was only one baby.”

“You disappeared before my first ultrasound.”

His fiancée turned sharply.

“You told me she invented the pregnancy to stop the divorce.”

“That’s what I believed,” Marcus said.

“No,” Patricia whispered.

“That’s what you wanted everyone to believe.”

Marcus glared at his mother.

“Stay out of this.”

Patricia’s hands began to shake.

“I can’t.

Not anymore.”

She hurried to a cabinet and removed an old envelope bearing my name.

My stomach tightened when I recognized the hospital seal.

“I mailed that eight years ago,” I said.

“It contained the ultrasound showing four babies.”

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Mom, put it away.”

His fiancée looked between them.

“Why is that envelope here?”

Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because it was never returned to her,” she said.

“Marcus received it—and ordered me to hide it.”

The children moved closer to me.

“That’s a lie!” Marcus shouted.

Then Patricia opened the envelope and pulled out something else—something I had never placed inside.

Marcus lunged for it, but his fiancée snatched it first.

She read the first line, looked at Marcus, and quietly removed her engagement ring.
