Chapter 1: The Ultimatum
"Either you clean my mother's apartment tonight…
or tomorrow, I'm filing for divorce."
My husband delivered the ultimatum from my couch, a cold beer in his hand and six months of unemployment behind him.
He hadn't earned a paycheck in half a year.
I was paying the mortgage, the bills, his car payment—and even the credit card he secretly used for bars, expensive flowers, and things he never brought home to me.
Still, he looked at me as if I were the one failing our marriage.
His mother sat nearby, calmly sipping tea, watching him humiliate me inside the apartment I had purchased years before meeting him.
They expected me to cry.
They expected me to apologize.
Most of all, they expected me to obey.
Instead, I smiled, took his mother's keys, and stepped out without saying another word.
Twenty minutes later, I entered her supposedly "dirty little apartment."
But there was nothing little about it.
A crystal chandelier glittered above a sweeping staircase.
Red wine spread across the white marble floor beside a shattered bottle.
And on a perfectly polished desk sat a mysterious $1,500 bill—with my full name printed across the top.
At first, I thought it was a mistake.
Then I recognized the account number.
The charge had been connected to my company—and authorized with a digital copy of my signature.
My hands began to shake as I opened the drawer beneath it.
Inside were divorce papers, secret bank transfers, photographs of my private documents, and a handwritten plan describing exactly how my husband intended to take my home, destroy my career, and make me look like a crjminal.
Then I noticed the tiny blue light blinking from a camera on the bookshelf.
Someone was watching me.
That was when my phone vibrated.
My husband had sent only two words:
"Done yet?"
He thought I was cleaning away the evidence.

And he certainly didn't know that the divorce threat he used to control me was about to become the first piece of evidence that destroyed his entire plan.
