Chapter 2: The Man Who Was There That Night

The elderly lady's hands would not stop shaking as she reached across the table and gently held the waitress by the wrist.

"What is your name, my darling?" she whispered.

"Rose," the waitress said quietly.

"My name is Rose."

The old woman closed her eyes.

Tears ran down her face.

"I named you Rose.

The night they took you from the hospital, that was the name I had already chosen."

The arrogant woman slammed her hand on the table.

"This is ridiculous.

Anyone could have looked up our family history and planned this.

She is a con artist and I will prove it."

Rose stepped back.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I am not trying to take anything from anyone.

I did not even know who you were until five minutes ago."

"Convenient," the arrogant woman snapped.

"Very convenient."

But then an older gentleman at the next table slowly stood up.

He had been sitting there quietly the entire time.

He straightened his jacket and looked directly at the arrogant woman.

"I think," he said calmly, "that you should sit down and listen.

Because I have been waiting a very long time to say what I know."

The arrogant woman's face went pale.

Rose turned to look at the man.

"Who are you?" she asked.

He reached into his coat and placed a worn envelope on the table.

"Someone who was there the night you disappeared."

What is inside that envelope — and what does this man know that could change everything?
