Chapter 2: The Relay

The bills told a story my parents never intended me to see.

The utilities were normal.

Groceries were reasonable.

But two line items stopped me cold.

A monthly payment to a storage facility I had never heard of.

And a recurring transfer — every single month — to Kevin's personal account.

Labeled "household support."

My parents had been forwarding part of my money directly to Kevin.

While telling me he had nothing.

I sat in that hotel room until 2 a.m.

doing the math.

Over three years, more than forty thousand dollars I had sent home had quietly passed through to my brother.

The brother who owed me fourteen months of truck payments.

The brother whose wedding I was supposed to fund.

I called Melissa.

"They've been running it like a relay," I said.

"I send it to them.

They send it to him."

She went quiet for a moment.

"Dani.

Does Kevin's fiancée know any of this?"

I hadn't thought about her once.

Her name was Amber.

We had met twice.

She seemed decent.

Quiet.

Nothing like Kevin.

I pulled up her number.

My thumb hovered over it for a long time.

Then my phone lit up with an incoming call.

It wasn't Kevin.

It wasn't Dad.

It was Amber.
