Chapter 2: The Buttons on the Floor

Ethan's eyes moved from his father to the camera.
Then to Sophia.
Her face had changed.
The tears were gone.
Her jaw was tight.
"Ethan," she said carefully.
"That camera has been glitching for weeks.
You know that."
Richard said nothing.
Ethan walked slowly to the wall and unclipped the small device.
His hands weren't steady.
"Then you won't mind if I check it."
Sophia stepped forward.
"Why are you looking at me like that?
He grabbed me.
I was scared—"
"He was standing across the room, Sophia."
The words came out flat.
Quiet.
Like something had shifted inside him.
His sister Claire, who had been frozen in the doorway, finally spoke.
"Ethan…
I saw her go into that room alone.
Dad was in the hallway with me.
He only walked in after she screamed."
Sophia spun toward her.
"You're lying.
You've always taken his side—"
"I'm not taking anyone's side." Claire's voice didn't waver.
"I'm telling you what I saw."
The room went completely still.
Ethan looked down at the camera in his hands.
Then he looked at his father — still standing where he had been sl@pped, one hand pressed to his cheek, saying nothing.
And then Ethan noticed something on the floor near Sophia's feet.
A button.
And then another one — closer to the door than to where Richard had been standing.
His face went white.
