Chapter 5: Monday Morning

Darius left the house at seven.

He didn't say goodbye.

Not out of cruelty — he simply walked to the door, picked up his jacket, and was gone.

Vanessa heard the car start in the driveway.

She stood at the kitchen window and watched the headlights sweep across the garden wall and disappear.

She told herself she wasn't worried.

By nine o'clock she had called her lawyer twice.

The first call went to voicemail.

The second call was answered by his assistant, who told her he was in a meeting and would return her call before noon.

He did not call before noon.

She drove to the boutique at ten.

The shop was open.

Her two staff members were there — a young woman named Chloe who had worked with her for three years, and a quiet older man named Gerald who handled the stockroom and deliveries.

Both of them looked up when she walked in.

Neither of them smiled the way they usually did.

"Is everything all right?" Chloe asked.

"Everything is fine," Vanessa said.

"Why wouldn't it be?"

Chloe glanced at Gerald.

Gerald found something to do near the back shelves.

Vanessa went into her office and closed the door.

On her desk was a printed email.

Chloe had left it there — the way she always printed important correspondence and left it centered on the desk blotter.

The email was from a legal firm Vanessa did not recognize.

The subject line read: Notice of Lease Termination — Formal Confirmation and Vacate Timeline.

She read it standing up.

She did not sit down.

The letter was precise and unhurried.

It confirmed the termination of her lease.

It outlined a thirty-day vacate period beginning on the first of the following month.

It listed the three prior notices that had been sent and acknowledged.

It noted that no response had been received.

It wished her well in her future endeavors.

That last line.

Wished her well.

She set the paper down.

Picked it up again.

Set it down.

She opened her office door.

"Chloe."

Chloe appeared immediately.

She had been close.

"Yes?"

"Did you see this email before you printed it?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"Did you read it?"

Another pause.

Smaller.

"Yes."

"Does Gerald know?"

Chloe's expression answered before she did.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

She went back into her office.

She sat down this time.

Outside, through the glass front of the boutique, she could see the street.

The building across the road.

The ordinary Tuesday morning moving past her window as though nothing had changed.

Seven years.

She had been in this space for seven years.

Her phone rang.

It was her lawyer.

"I've reviewed the documentation," he said, without preamble.

"The termination is lawful.

The renewal window closed on the fourteenth.

We missed it."

"You missed it."

A careful pause.

"The notices were sent to the address on file.

The address you provided."

"I told your office to filter correspondence from property companies.

I told you that six months ago."

"Vanessa." His voice was steady.

"You told us to deprioritize cold outreach from property management firms.

This was not cold outreach.

This was legal correspondence from the registered owner of the building you operate from." A pause.

"I should have flagged it regardless.

I accept that.

But the window is closed.

The termination stands."

"Can we challenge it?"

"On what grounds?"

She had no answer.

"There is one option," he said.

"You could approach Mr.

Reed directly.

Request a negotiation.

A new lease, new terms." He paused.

"Given the circumstances, I would not expect him to be receptive.

But it is the only remaining path."

She ended the call.

Her phone lit up again almost immediately.

A text from Darius.

*Meeting ran two hours.

Call me when you can.*

She stared at the message.

Then she put the phone face-down on the desk.

Through the office window, Chloe was helping a customer.

The customer was holding up a silk scarf, turning it in the light.

Smiling.

Completely unaware.

May you like

Vanessa looked at the termination letter again.

Thirty days.
