Chapter 3: The Woman Who Already Knew

Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Show me the warnings.”
Elena pulled a folded envelope from her purse.
“This arrived at my hotel this morning.”
“You came to Boston today?”
“For my sister’s wedding.
I told no one where we were staying.”
Dominic opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Elena leaving the hotel with the four boys.
Across it, someone had written:
YOU WERE TOLD TO KEEP HIS SONS AWAY FROM HIM.
Dominic’s hand began to shake.
“They were watching you.”
“They’ve always been watching us,” Elena whispered.
“Every year, on the boys’ birthday, another warning arrives.”
“Why didn’t you go to the police?”
“Because the first envelope contained photographs of you sleeping.”
Dominic looked up sharply.
“Inside my house?”
Elena nodded.
“Whoever sent them could reach you whenever they wanted.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Mom, is that man our dad?”
The question broke something inside Dominic.
Before Elena could answer, the restroom door opened.
Sloane stood there, still wearing the dress chosen for their engagement.
Her eyes moved from Dominic to Elena, then to the four boys.
But she did not look surprised.
She looked furious.
“Elena,” Sloane said coldly.
“You were warned never to bring them back.”
Dominic turned toward her.
“How do you know about my sons?”
Sloane’s face changed as she realized what she had admitted.
