Chapter 2: What She Carried to the Door

Part 2 ⬇️
My mother didn't say anything at first.
She just held that folder out with both hands shaking.
I took it.
Inside were documents — legal ones.
And photographs.
And at the bottom, a letter in my mother-in-law's handwriting dated three weeks before our wedding.
*"If she causes trouble, we move on the account first.
She won't fight back.
Her type never does."*
My mother said: "They knew, sweetheart.
Before you even walked down that aisle."
I couldn't speak.
Then the front door opened behind me.
My mother-in-law walked in without knocking, looked at the folder in my hands, and didn't even flinch.
She said: "Whatever your mother brought into this house doesn't change anything."
My mother stepped forward.
"It changes everything.
I've already spoken to someone."
"Spoken to who?" she said.
And for the first time since I'd known her, her voice was just slightly too quick.
My mother looked at me, not at her.
"Show her the last page," she said.
I turned to the back of the folder.
And I understood why my mother had been crying before she even reached the door.
