Chapter 2: The Name Beneath the Clasp

My hands went cold.
Arthur stepped away from the altar.
“Grandmother, you gave me that tiara yesterday.
You said it was costume jewelry.”
“I did no such thing,” Agatha snapped.
“That girl brought it here.”
“That girl is my bride,” Arthur said.
“And I put it in her hands myself.”
The whispers began again, but nobody was laughing now.
Dermot raised the tiara toward the light.
“There’s an inscription inside the band.
It wasn’t there when I appraised it.”
Agatha’s face lost its color.
“Give it to me.”
Dermot pulled it back.
“Not until she reads this.”
He placed the tiara in my shaking hands.
Beneath the clasp, scratched so faintly I almost missed it, were six words:
*For Rose, who saved the Thorne family.*
“My mother’s name is Rose,” I whispered.
Arthur stared at Agatha.
“Why is her mother’s name inside our family tiara?”
Agatha struck her cane against the floor.
“Stop this wedding.”
Then the church doors opened behind me.
My mother stood there in her cleaning uniform, gripping an old sealed envelope.
When Agatha saw it, she whispered, “Rose, you promised never to bring that letter here.”
