Chapter 2: The Name That Stopped the Room

— PART 2 —
The oldest boy looked straight at the elderly woman and said, "We came because our father asked us to.
Before he d*ed, he made us promise."
The room didn't breathe.
The elderly woman's hand went to her chest.
"Your father?
Who is your father?"
The boy didn't flinch.
"His name was Daniel.
Daniel Hargrove."
Someone gasped.
A man near the fireplace went completely still.
The elderly woman — Margaret Hargrove — turned slowly toward her son, Richard, who was standing beside his wife across the room.
His face had gone white.
"Richard." Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Who are these children?"
Richard said nothing.
The doctor stepped forward and held out the envelope.
"Mrs.
Hargrove, these four boys are Daniel's sons.
All four of them.
The DNA results are inside."
Margaret's eyes filled.
"Daniel has been g*ne for three years.
How—"
"He knew he was dying," the doctor said quietly.
"He made arrangements.
He wanted his sons to be acknowledged before the estate was settled."
The room erupted.
Voices overlapped.
Someone grabbed Richard's arm.
But Margaret wasn't looking at Richard anymore.
She was staring at her daughter-in-law, Claire — who hadn't moved, hadn't spoken, and whose expression wasn't shock at all.
It was something much closer to panic.
---
What does Claire know — and what was she hiding all along?
The truth is darker than anyone in that room expected.
