Julian's hand shot out and grabbed my wrist.
"You're not going anywhere," he said, his voice dropping low.
"You signed a contract yesterday.
You belong here."
I looked down at his hand on my wrist.
Then I looked up at him.
"Let go," I said quietly.
"Or I'll make sure everyone at your office knows exactly what happened in this house this morning."
He released me.
But Victoria stepped forward, blocking the door.
"You have nothing," she hissed.
"You came into this family with nothing.
You think that little check your parents gave you means anything?
Julian's family is worth more than your entire bloodline."
I tilted my head.
"Is that what he told you?"
Victoria faltered for just a second.
"What?"
"Ask your son," I said, "whose name is actually on the deed to this house."
The color drained from Julian's face.
Not anger this time.
Something closer to panic.
Victoria turned to him slowly.
"Julian.
What is she talking about?"
He said nothing.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes locked onto my backpack — specifically, the corner of the marriage certificate visible through the mesh pocket.
That was when I understood.
He hadn't just married me.
He had needed to.
