Chapter 2: The Man in the Photo
Vanessa didn't answer right away.
She looked around the room.
Thirty guests.
Thirty witnesses.
Then she straightened her shoulders and said quietly, "I was protecting you."
Luca didn't move.
"From what?"
"From something Rosa should have told you herself.
Years ago."
The room went completely silent.
Emily's hand tightened on her father's arm.
"Don't let her do this."
Luca raised one hand.
"Let her finish."
Vanessa exhaled slowly.
"Rosa left something in that cabinet, Luca.
Something that changes what you think you know about your marriage."
Emily stepped forward.
"My mother was a good woman."
"I'm not saying she wasn't." Vanessa's voice stayed calm.
"I'm saying she made one decision.
A long time ago.
And she never told you."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"How do you know what's in that cabinet?"
Vanessa hesitated.
That half-second was enough.
"You've been inside that house." His voice dropped.
"Before tonight."
She didn't deny it.
Emily pulled out her phone with a shaking hand.
"Dad.
The men who came yesterday." She turned the screen toward him.
"I took a picture of one of them."
Luca looked at the photo.
His expression didn't change.
But something behind his eyes did.
He knew that man.
