Chapter 2: The Letter Hidden Inside Bun

Rosa looked down at the sleeping child.
“Because 4 years ago, you ordered me to stay away from you.”
Alessandro’s face hardened.
“I gave no such order.”
“You sent a letter,” Rosa whispered.
“It said Lily and I would never be safe if I told anyone who her father was.”
“Where is it?”
Rosa’s shaking hand pointed toward the kitchen.
“Sewn inside Bun.”
Alessandro called for Mr.
Bruno.
Minutes later, the elderly butler returned with the stuffed rabbit and carefully opened a hidden seam.
A yellowed envelope slipped onto the table.
Alessandro stared at the Moretti seal.
“That is my family’s mark,” he said.
“But this is not my handwriting.”
Mr.
Bruno examined the date.
“Boss, you could not have written this.
You were in Naples that entire month.”
A floorboard creaked above them.
Isabella stood halfway down the staircase, her face pale.
“A forged letter proves nothing,” she said.
Alessandro slowly looked up.
“No one said it was forged.”
Isabella froze.
Then Mr.
Bruno turned the envelope over and found two initials pressed faintly into the wax.
His hands began to tremble.
“I know who sent this,” he whispered.
“But if I say the name, your marriage—and the truce—will be over.”
