Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

The room went still.
Every conversation in the living room died at once.
Heads turned.
Smiles faded.
The colorful balloons and warm party lights suddenly felt out of place against the cold silence that had taken over the hallway.
Sondra's mouth opened, then closed.
She glanced toward the doorway — toward the watching faces — and something shifted behind her eyes.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"You're making a scene," she said quietly, smoothing her dress with both hands.
"In front of everyone."
"Good," Marcus said.
He didn't lower his voice.
"Let them hear."
Maya pressed closer to her father's side, her small fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She was watching Sondra the way a child watches something they've learned to be afraid of.
Then Marcus's mother stepped out from the living room doorway.
She had heard everything.
Her eyes moved slowly from Sondra to Maya, then down to the little girl's tear-streaked face.
Something in her expression went very quiet and very serious.
"This isn't the first time, is it, sweetheart," she said softly — and it wasn't a question.
Maya looked up at her grandmother.
Her lips pressed together.
And she slowly shook her head.
Sondra's composure cracked.
"She's a child.
She exaggerates—"
"I have a video," the grandmother said.
📱
The hallway went ice cold.

What's on that video — and what has Sondra been hiding from Marcus all along?
