Chapter 2: The Name She Buried in Charleston

Part 2 ⬇️
Daniel's hands were steady as he pulled the first document from the envelope.
Michael didn't move.
Neither did anyone else in that ballroom.
"What is this?" Michael asked quietly.
"A marriage certificate," Daniel said.
"Filed in Charleston.
Three years ago."
The room went completely still.
Michael turned to Olivia.
"You were married before?"
Olivia's chin lifted.
"It wasn't real.
We were separated.
It meant nothing."
"It meant something," Daniel said.
"Because the divorce was never finalized."
A woman near the front row gasped.
Someone else whispered something I couldn't hear.
Michael took the document from Daniel's hand.
His eyes moved slowly across the page.
Then he looked up at Olivia.
"This is your signature."
"Michael, listen to me —"
"Is this your signature or not?"
Olivia's jaw tightened.
"You don't understand what he put me through."
"That's not what I asked you."
She said nothing.
Michael set the paper down on the altar table.
Carefully.
The way a man does when he is trying very hard not to show what he's feeling.
Then Daniel reached back into the envelope.
"There's one more thing," he said.
"And this one…
this one involves the money."
Olivia spun toward me.
Her voice dropped to almost nothing.
"Clara.
Please.
Don't let him do this."
I looked at my son.
Michael was already reaching for the second document.
---
What was in that second document — and what had Olivia done with Clara's money?
The full truth is more shocking than anyone in that room expected.
