Chapter 2: The Secret She Was Forbidden to Tell

Caleb couldn't move.
He stood there staring at Olivia — this woman who had quietly cleaned his home every week for three years — and felt something crack open inside his chest.
"Olivia." His voice came out barely above a whisper.
She startled awake, and the moment she saw him, the color drained from her face.
"Mr.
Hart." She scrambled to sit up straight, pulling the babies closer.

"How long?"
She looked away.
"It's nothing.

"How long, Olivia?"

His father, George, had already lowered himself onto the bench beside her.
Without a word, the old man reached into his coat pocket and pressed his scarf around the nearest baby.
Caleb looked at the worn shopping bag.
The empty bottles.
The single piece of bread.
"You've been feeding my children before your own," Olivia said suddenly, her voice breaking.
"Every week I cleaned your kitchen, and I never once — " She stopped herself.
But it was what she said next that made Caleb go completely still.
"Your wife told me not to say anything to you.
She said if I did, she'd make sure I never worked in this city again."
