Chapter 2: The Woman in the Hallway

The Colonel tightened his grip on the wheel.

Then his daughter stirred against the passenger seat.

“Dad…

don’t take me to the county hospital.”

“Why not?”

Her bruised face turned toward him.

“His family owns it.

The doctor covered for him last time.”

“Last time?” His voice broke.

“You told me tonight was the first.”

“I was afraid.” Tears filled her eyes.

“He said no one would believe me.”

The satellite radio crackled again.

“Colonel, we accessed the estate’s security system.

Someone erased the hallway footage twelve minutes ago.”

“Recover it.”

“We’re trying, sir.

But there’s something else.

A second person was in that hallway.”

His daughter suddenly grabbed his sleeve.

“Dad, she watched everything.

She could have stopped him, but she just stood there.”

Before he could ask who, her phone lit up.

Her partner was calling.

The Colonel put it on speaker.

“Bring her back,” the man said calmly.

“Or I’ll tell her what you did all those years ago.”

His daughter stared at her father.

“What is he talking about?”

Then the radio operator whispered, “Colonel…

we identified the woman from the hallway.

You know her.”
