Chapter 2: The Account That Didn't Exist

Carmine's hand closed around Helena's wrist before she could touch Leo.
"Don't."
His voice was quiet.
That was the part that scared her.
Helena pulled her arm back and laughed.
"He's your son, Carmine.
Not mine.
I didn't ask for him in this house."
"He's seven years old."
"He scratched a ninety-thousand-dollar car."
Leo hadn't moved.
He was still on one knee, the wet cloth in his hands, eyes fixed on the garage floor.
Carmine crouched down in front of him.
"Leo.
Go inside."
Helena stepped forward.
"He stays until—"
"I said go inside." Carmine didn't look at her.
He kept his eyes on Leo until the boy stood and walked toward the door.
Then he straightened up slowly and turned to face Helena.
"This ends today."
Helena's expression shifted.
Just slightly.
Something behind her eyes that wasn't quite confidence anymore.
"You don't know what you're saying."
"I found the account, Helena."
She went still.
"The one you told me didn't exist."
The two bodyguards at the far end of the garage exchanged a glance.
Neither of them moved.
Helena's fingers tightened around the key fob.
"You don't want to do this here," she said softly.
Carmine reached into his jacket and placed a folded document on the hood of her car.
"I already did."
