Chapter 2: The Call He Wasn't Expecting

The confirmation screen glowed: *Transfer complete.*
I set the phone face-down on the floor and closed my eyes.
Another cramp rolled through me.
I breathed.
Counted.
Held on.
Downstairs, someone clinked glasses and toasted Adrian's name.
Twenty minutes later, his phone rang.
I heard it through the floorboards.
Then I heard him laugh — that short, confused laugh men use when they don't yet understand they've already lost.
Then silence.
Then his footsteps on the stairs.
Fast.
He pushed the bedroom door open so hard it cracked against the wall.
"What did you do?"
I looked at him from the floor.
Still deadpan.
"Mara." His voice dropped to something I hadn't heard before.
Not anger.
Something closer to fear.
"What did you do to my accounts?"
Vanessa appeared behind him in the doorway, champagne still in hand.
Her smile was gone.
"Adrian," she said slowly.
"Your lawyer is calling."
He didn't look at her.
He was staring at me.
"You can't," he said.
"You don't have access.
You never had access."
I said nothing.
He crossed the room in three steps and grabbed my wrist.
"Answer me."
I looked down at his hand on my arm.
Then back up at his face.
"Let go," I said quietly.
"You're touching someone who now owns your firm."
His grip loosened.
Just slightly.
That's when we both heard it — the front door opening downstairs, and a voice that made Adrian go completely still.
His lead investor.
Arriving unannounced.
