Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

**— PART 2 —**
Victoria didn't move.
For three full seconds, she stood in the doorway and said nothing.
Then she smiled.
"Nathan.
You're home early."
"Sit down, Victoria."
She didn't sit.
She walked toward him slowly, her eyes on the matchbook.
"That's not what it looks like."
"Then tell me what it looks like."
She glanced at Margaret.
Something cold passed across her face.
"Whatever she told you—"
"She didn't tell me anything." Nathan set the matchbook on top of the financial records.
"My auditor did."
Victoria's smile didn't disappear.
It just stopped reaching her eyes.
"Dominic Rainer is an old family connection.
Nothing more."
"Forty-three thousand dollars is not a family connection."
The room went quiet.
Ruth Bell stood near the door, still holding her short paycheck.
The young maintenance worker hadn't left.
Margaret didn't look at Victoria at all.
They were all watching Nathan.
Victoria lowered her voice.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
"Then explain it."
She stepped closer.
"Some things were done to protect you.
To protect this house."
Nathan looked at her for a long moment.
Then he looked at Margaret.
And Margaret finally said the words she had been holding for months.
"She wasn't alone, Mr.
Whitmore.
There was someone else.
Someone who came here the night you were in London."
Victoria's hand shot out.
"Don't you dare—"
"Who was it, Margaret?" Nathan said quietly.
Margaret opened her mouth.
And Victoria's phone rang.
The name on the screen made Nathan's bl00d run cold.
