Chapter 2: The Photograph on the Desk

Victoria's eyes locked on the matchbook.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then she laughed.

"Nathan.

You're home early." She crossed the room and reached for his arm.

"Whatever Margaret told you—"

"Margaret didn't tell me anything." He set the matchbook down.

"My auditor did."

Victoria's smile held.

Barely.

"There's a simple explanation for all of this."

"Then explain Blackstone Crown."

The smile disappeared.

Ruth took a small step back.

Margaret stood completely still.

Victoria's voice dropped.

"You don't understand what you're looking at."

"I understand exactly what I'm looking at." Nathan opened the folder on his desk.

"Forty-seven transfers.

Eleven months.

All routed through a shell account connected to Dominic Rainer."

"I was protecting you—"

"From what?" His voice was quiet.

That was the part that frightened everyone in the room.

Nathan Whitmore didn't shout.

"From what, Victoria?"

She said nothing.

Then Margaret spoke — so softly it was almost a whisper.

"Mr.

Whitmore.

There's something else you need to see."

She placed a photograph on the desk beside the matchbook.

Nathan looked down.

His face went completely still.

Because the man standing next to Victoria in that photograph wasn't Dominic Rainer.

It was someone Nathan had trusted far longer.
