Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recorder

My hands were shaking as I took the recorder from Mom.

Melissa stepped forward.

"Daniel, don't.

She's been confused for months.

The doctor said—"

"Stop talking."

I pressed play.

The first thing I heard was my mother's voice, quiet and careful.

Then Melissa's — sharp, close to the microphone, like she knew exactly where the rooms were small enough to carry sound.

*"Sign it, Eleanor.

It takes five minutes."*

*"I don't understand what I'm signing."*

*"You don't need to understand it.

Daniel trusts me.

That's enough."*

I looked up at Melissa.

She didn't look angry anymore.

She looked calculating.

"That's out of context," she said quietly.

"What was she signing, Melissa?"

Silence.

Mom touched my arm.

"There's more, son.

Keep listening."

I did.

And then I heard a third voice on the recording.

A man's voice.

One I recognized.

My chest went cold.

It was my brother.

"What is this?" I whispered.

Mom closed her eyes.

"They've been meeting here every Tuesday.

While you're at work.

While I'm supposed to be too old to notice."

Melissa's jaw tightened.

She reached for her phone.

"Don't," I said.

She dialed anyway.
