Chapter 1: The Woman Who Borrowed Sugar

*I caught my husband half-naked in our $18,000 swimming pool with the married neighbor who borrowed sugar from me every Tuesday.
He looked straight into my eyes and whispered, "Please don't make a scene." So I quietly gathered their clothes and pressed one button.
Within seconds, the entire neighborhood was watching — and neither of them realized who was about to pull into our driveway.*
I'd come home early from work, carrying groceries and thinking about what to make for dinner.
The moment I opened the side gate, I heard water splashing.
Then I saw them.
My husband, Ethan, had his arms wrapped around Brooke, our next-door neighbor, in the swimming pool we'd spent eighteen thousand dollars building.
He spotted me first.
"Lauren!"
His hands immediately dropped from her waist.
Brooke sank into the water until only her shoulders and bright red lips were visible.
I recognized that lipstick.
She'd left the same shade on a coffee mug in my kitchen the previous Tuesday.
The day she'd come over to borrow sugar.
Again.
Suddenly, all those Tuesday visits made perfect sense.
Ethan cleared his throat.
"Lauren, listen.
Don't make a scene."
I glanced toward the patio chairs.
His linen pants were folded beside Brooke's floral sundress.
Her black bikini top hung over the armrest, and their sandals were scattered across the concrete.
Her phone was lying beside his wallet.
The screen lit up.
Several missed calls from her husband.
I felt something twist inside my chest.
This was the woman I'd welcomed into my home, shared coffee with, and comforted when she complained about her marriage.
And Ethan was the man who'd promised to love me forever.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I stepped toward the lounge chairs.
"Lauren, what are you doing?" Ethan demanded.
I picked up his pants, shirt, and belt.
Then Brooke's dress, bikini top, and sandals.
I folded everything neatly over my arm.
"Please," Brooke whispered.
"We can explain."
I glanced at the wet footprints stretching from my kitchen door to the pool.
"You already have."
Ethan grabbed the pool's edge.
"Stop being ridiculous!"
I looked at his wedding ring glittering beneath the water.
For years, he'd called me paranoid whenever I questioned his behavior.
Especially when I'd insisted on installing security cameras around our property.
He'd laughed at the expense.
But those cameras covered everything.
The backyard.
The pool.
The side gate.
And every entrance to our house.
I walked toward the security panel beside the kitchen door.
Ethan's expression shifted immediately.
"Lauren, don't."
At exactly 5:42 p.m., I pressed the emergency button.
A deafening alarm exploded across the backyard.
Within seconds, dogs were barking, garage doors were opening, and neighbors were stepping outside.
Mr.
Henderson appeared across the street holding his coffee.
Mrs.
Whitmore leaned over her garden fence.
Two teenagers stopped their bicycles to stare.
Ethan shouted, "TURN THAT OFF!"
I stood beside the panel, holding their clothes.
"Why?
You brought your affair into my backyard."
My phone vibrated.
**Security Monitoring: Emergency alarm received.
Patrol officers dispatched.**
Another notification appeared in the neighborhood community app.
**Security Alert — 214 Willow Creek Lane.**
Brooke covered her face.
Ethan tried climbing out of the pool, then realized I was holding everything he could wear.
I reached into his pants pocket and removed the key fob to his brand-new pickup truck.
His eyes widened.
"Lauren, don't you dare!"
I held it above the deep end.
"This is the last thing of yours going into my pool."
Then I dropped it.
The keys disappeared beneath the water.
For the first time, Ethan had absolutely nothing to say.
Suddenly, a vehicle pulled up outside.
I heard a car door slam.
Brooke turned toward the gate, her face draining of color.
I recognized the black SUV parked outside.
**It belonged to her husband.**
And just as footsteps approached the gate, my phone displayed another notification.
The security footage had been saved.
---
What happens when that gate swings open and Brooke's husband sees everything?
