Chapter 2: The Voice I Hadn't Heard in Seven Years

Part 2 ⬇️
Dad didn't move.
"What are you talking about?" he said.
"I just walked through that door."
The officer didn't lower his hand.
"Sir, we've been watching this address for six weeks."
Noah pressed his face into my side.
I held him tighter.
Melissa had stopped crying.
She was watching Dad now — and she almost looked relieved.
"Daniel," she said quietly.
"Just tell them."
Dad turned to her.
Something in his face changed.
"You called them," he said.
Not a question.
She didn't answer.
The second officer moved toward the bookshelf and crouched down beside Noah's camera.
"This wasn't the only recording in the house," he said.
He held up a small black device I had never seen before.
It wasn't Noah's.
Dad went pale.
"That's not mine," he whispered.
"It was found behind the vent in your bedroom," the officer said.
"Fourteen months of footage."
I didn't understand.
None of it made sense.
Then the lead officer looked at me — not at Dad, not at Melissa.
At me.
"How old are you?" he asked.
"Fifteen," I said.
He nodded slowly.
"There's someone outside who's been waiting a long time to see you."
I looked at the door.
And then I heard a voice I hadn't heard in seven years.
