Chapter 2: Long Enough

Lily was only seven years old.
She hadn't done anything wrong.
When Megan's hand came across her face at the dinner table, everything went silent.
I stood up so fast my chair scraped the floor.
"Megan.
What did you just do?"
Megan didn't even flinch.
She picked up her fork like nothing had happened.
"She was being rude.
Someone had to handle it."
I turned to Mark.
He was sitting right there.
He saw everything.
"Mark.
Say something."
He looked at me, then at his mother, then back at his plate.
"Let's not make a scene, Chloe."
My chest went cold.
Not Megan's name.
Not Lily's tears.
Just — don't make a scene.
I took Lily upstairs.
She was shaking.
I held her until she stopped crying, and that's when my niece Zoe appeared in the doorway.
She was pale.
"Aunt Chloe," she whispered.
"I need to show you something.
I found it on my mom's phone last week and I didn't know what to do with it."
She held out her phone.
On the screen was a voice recording.
The file name had Mark's name on it.
My hands started to tremble.
"How long have you had this, Zoe?"
She looked at the floor.
"Long enough."
