Chapter 1: The Hand That Hovered

I couldn't pull Emma back in time.

My six-month-old daughter let out a sharp, piercing shriek.

It wasn't a standard fussy cry or the gentle whimper she gave when she was tired.

It was a terrified, breathless scream that instantly sliced through the background Christmas music and froze everyone around the dinner table.

For a moment, shock paralyzed me.

Lauren stood directly across from me, her hand hovering in the air.

My sister didn't look remorseful at all — just annoyed.

"Oh, calm down," she snorted.

"It was just a light tap."

I stared at her in total disbelief.

"You just h*t my child."

Emma buried her face into my collarbone, trembling so violently I could feel it through her festive red onesie.

Lauren rolled her eyes with an exasperated sigh.

"She wouldn't stop crying.

Kids need discipline."

Across the table, my mother, Margaret, suddenly found her dinner plate fascinating.

Dad cleared his throat uncomfortably.

Uncle Frank shifted nervously in his chair, averting his eyes.

Not a single person spoke up.

Then the heavy screech of a wooden chair echoed across the floor.

My husband stood up.

Captain James Walker had returned from a nine-month overseas deployment just twelve days ago.

"Get out," James said, his tone chillingly flat.

Lauren blinked, caught off guard.

"Excuse me?"

James didn't raise his voice, but his words carried absolute authority.

"You struck my daughter.

You're leaving this house right now."

Lauren let out a nervous, thin laugh.

"This isn't even your house to kick me out of."

James slowly turned his gaze to my father.

"Then her father can decide if someone who h*ts babies gets to stay for dessert."

Dad opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

Lauren appealed to Mom.

"Are you really going to let him talk to me like that in your own home?"

Mom finally looked up, wringing her napkin.

"James, everyone is stressed.

Let's not ruin Christmas over this."

Something inside me finally snapped.

"Christmas was ruined the moment she laid a hand on Emma."

Mom's eyes snapped toward me sharply.

"Claire, stop being so dramatic."

James immediately stepped to my side.

"We're done here."

Lauren smirked mockingly.

"Fine by me.

Take your crying baby and go."

James set his jaw.

He grabbed Emma's diaper bag from the back of the chair, draped my coat over my shoulders, and locked eyes with Lauren one last time.

"Don't you ever come near my daughter again."

We turned and headed for the front entryway.

Mom called after us from the dining room, but I kept walking.

We reached the front door, but as James reached for the knob, Dad's voice halted us in our tracks.

"Claire," Dad called out quietly, his voice heavy.

"Before you walk out that door, there's something you need to know about Lauren and Emma."

The entire room fell completely silent.
