I didn't sleep that night.
I lay on my bed staring at the ceiling, Brendan's text still glowing on my phone screen.
*"Come tomorrow.
We still have three things left to take care of."*
Three things.
Three more humiliations he had already planned.
Already scheduled.
Like appointments.
I thought about texting back.
I thought about calling him and screaming every word I had heard through that door.
Instead, I opened my notes app and started writing.
Every incident I could remember.
Every "accident." Every night I had cried alone while he told me I was overreacting.
By 3am, I had filled four pages.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Not Brendan this time.
It was Liam.
*"Hey.
I need to talk to you.
Not about what you think.
Please don't tell Brendan I messaged you."*
My hands went still.
Liam had been Brendan's closest friend since college.
He had been in that room, laughing with the rest of them.
Why was he contacting me now?
I stared at his message for a long time.
Then I typed back: *"Talk."*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, one sentence came through.
*"There's something about Scarlett you don't know.
Something that changes everything."*
