Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

He closed his laptop.

Not to help me.

To block me out.

"Tessa, I have somewhere to be tonight.

Call a cab."

Another contraction hit.

I gripped the counter and breathed through it while he straightened his collar in the hallway mirror.

"Grant.

I am in labor.

Our daughter is coming tonight."

He turned around, and what I saw on his face wasn't panic or guilt.

It was annoyance.

"You've been dramatic about this pregnancy from the beginning.

You'll be fine."

Then he picked up his phone — the one that had been face down all evening — and I caught a single second of the screen before he turned it away.

A woman's name.

A message preview.

*"Is she gone yet?"*

My whole body went still despite the pain.

He walked to the door, pulled on his jacket, and said the words I will never forget for the rest of my life.

"Honestly, Tessa?

You've been dead weight for months.

Figure it out yourself."

The door closed.

I stood alone in our kitchen, in labor, in the rain-soaked silence he left behind.

I called my driver, Marcus.

He arrived in eleven minutes.

And as he helped me to the car, I made a decision.

Grant would never know what I knew.

Not yet.
