Chapter 2: What He Already Knew

My stomach was still empty.
My legs still ached.
But what hurt most was the silence.
I picked up my backpack from the floor and walked to my room without another word.
There was nothing left to say.
There never was.
I sat on my bed in the dark and listened to the sounds of the kitchen.
Water running.
Dishes clinking.
Vanessa humming softly like nothing had happened.
Twenty minutes later, I heard the front door open.
Dad was home.
I pressed my ear to the wall.
"How was everyone's evening?" he asked.
Vanessa's voice came back warm and easy.
"Good.
Dinner was lovely.
The kids were great."
I waited.
He didn't ask about me.
Then Caleb's voice, quieter than usual.
"Dad…
Nia didn't get to eat."
A pause.
"She was late," Vanessa said.
Same tone.
Calm.
Final.
"She was at tutoring," Caleb said.
"She texted."
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then my father's voice, low and careful.
"Vanessa, did you save her a plate?"
I held my breath.
Vanessa's answer came without hesitation.
"She needs to learn that this family runs on a schedule."
The kitchen went quiet.
And then my father said something I never expected.
Something that told me he had known about this before.
Something that told me this wasn't the first time.
