Chapter 2: The Message on Her Phone

Dad lifted the soggy card from the glass.
His special ink had bled until my name was almost gone.
“Who did this?”
Mommy Rachel folded her arms.
“It was an accident.
She was upset because I moved her somewhere safer.”
Dad looked at the lonely plate beside the trash can.
“You call that safer?”
“It’s one dinner,” she snapped.
“Stop making everything about her.”
My hands tightened around my crutches.
Dad knelt beside me.
“Did Rachel tell you to sit there?”
I wanted to answer, but Mommy Rachel’s eyes warned me to stay quiet.
Then Evan stepped between us.
“She tore up the card on purpose.”
“Evan!” Rachel shouted.
“And she told the other grown-ups not to help,” he continued, his voice shaking.
“She said this would be the last family dinner with her here.”
Dad slowly stood.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel’s face lost its color.
Before she could answer, her phone lit up on the table.
Dad glanced down and read the message across the screen:
“Did he sign the papers yet?
He can’t know what they’re really for.”
Dad picked up the phone.
“What papers, Rachel?”
