Chapter 2: The Document in Her Hand

I stopped walking but didn't turn around right away.

The gravel was wet beneath my shoes.

The processional music was still playing.

Three hundred people were sitting inside that vineyard, completely unaware that the woman who had paid for every single thing they were enjoying had just been told she wasn't family.

"Mrs.

Something about the way he said it — calm, certain, as though he had already decided how this would end — made me reach into my handbag.

I pulled out a single folded document and held it up.

Olivia's eyes dropped to the paper.

Her face went completely white.

"What is that?" she whispered.

What's in that document — and why did Olivia go pale the moment she saw it?

The truth is far bigger than a cancelled payment.
