Chapter 2: The Name She Never Mentioned

I didn't move.
I just stood beside my car and watched her walk toward me in that gown — the gown I had chosen with her, the gown I had paid for in full — and I felt nothing except a deep, quiet calm.
"Mom, please." Olivia's voice cracked as she reached me.
"You don't understand.
I can explain."
"You already explained," I said.
"At the gate.
In front of everyone."
"That was different.
Marcus's family — they have certain expectations.
His mother said having you there would cause problems." She touched my arm.
"It was just easier this way."
I looked down at her hand on my sleeve.
Then I looked at her face.
"Easier for whom, Olivia?"
She opened her mouth, but before she could answer, a car door slammed nearby.
A woman in a sharp cream dress was walking fast toward us, phone raised, face tight with fury.
I recognized her immediately.
Margaret Hale.
The groom's mother.
"What is happening?" she snapped, stopping between us.
"The vendors are calling me now.
The florist says payment has been reversed.
The caterer is threatening to pull the food."
Olivia turned pale beneath her makeup.
Margaret looked directly at me.
Then something shifted in her expression.
Not anger.
Recognition.
"Eleanor Hayes," she said slowly.
"You're *that* Eleanor Hayes."
The way she said my name made Olivia go very still.
