Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Nightstand

Part 2 — continued below 👇

---

Owen set the envelope on the nightstand like it was nothing.

"For you," he said.

"A little surprise."

I smiled.

My hands were steady.

I don't know how.

"What is it?"

"Open it tomorrow.

After breakfast." He kissed my cheek.

"Tonight I just want to be with my wife."

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then his phone buzzed on the dresser.

He glanced at the screen and turned it face-down in one smooth motion.

"Who was that?"

"Just Marcus.

Best man stuff."

He was lying.

I had seen the name before he flipped it.

It wasn't Marcus.

It was Richard.

I kept my voice light.

"Long night for him too."

"You know how he is." Owen laughed softly and moved toward the bathroom.

The moment the door clicked shut, I looked at the envelope.

Rebecca's voice was still in my head.

*We need to know what he brings with him.*

I didn't open it.

But I photographed both sides and slid it under the door to the adjoining room.

Thirty seconds later, I heard Rebecca's sharp intake of breath.

Then silence.

Then Dad's voice, low and tight:

"Mara.

This isn't just about the condo."

What Richard prepared — and what was inside that envelope — is worse than anything Mara expected.
