Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Steel Door

I pulled myself through the opening and surfaced inside a narrow concrete chamber beneath the pool.

There was air—and someone had been living there.

A thin mattress lay against the wall beside fresh water bottles and a half-eaten meal.

Then my hand touched a silver bracelet engraved with one name: Elena.

“No…” I whispered.

“This belonged to my wife.”

Above me, the iron cover slammed shut.

“Chloe!” I shouted, pounding against it.

“Open this now!”

Her muffled voice came through the metal.

“I warned you not to go down there, Marcus.”

My stomach twisted.

“What did you do to Elena?”

“I did what I had to do,” Chloe replied.

“You were supposed to forget her.”

Suddenly, Lily screamed from the patio.

“Let my daddy out!”

“Stay away from that handle!” Chloe snapped.

Then I heard a faint sound behind me—a chain dragging across the concrete.

I turned slowly toward a locked steel door hidden in the darkness.

A weak woman’s voice came from the other side.

“Marcus?

Is Lily with you?”

It was Elena’s voice.

But before I could answer, someone began unlocking the door from inside.
