Chapter 2: The Voice on Emma’s Phone

I slid one page from the envelope.

“It revokes every permission you had to act for me,” I said.

“The bank, my investments, my medical records—everything.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“You can’t do that without discussing it with me.”

“I just did.”

“You’ll regret this.”

“Why?

Because now you need my signature?”

Her eyes flicked toward the folder.

That tiny movement told me more than her words ever could.

I pulled out a photocopied form.

“My attorney found this among the papers you left.

The signature looks like mine, but I never signed it.”

Claire snatched at the page, but I stepped back.

“You’re confused,” she said.

“That’s exactly why I had to help you.”

“Then explain the property transfer section.”

All the color left her face.

Before she could answer, someone knocked.

Emma stood outside, clutching her phone with both hands.

Claire hurried toward her.

“Go home, Emma.”

Emma didn’t move.

“Grandma needs to hear this,” she whispered.

“Emma, don’t.”

My granddaughter looked at me, then pressed PLAY.

Claire’s own voice filled the room:

“Once she signs it, the house won’t be hers anymore.”

Claire froze.

But another voice answered on the recording—and I recognized it immediately.
