Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Folder

I said nothing.

I picked up my fork and kept eating.

But my hand wasn't steady.

Ashley reached for her phone quickly — too quickly.

She turned the screen face-down and slipped it back into her pocket without a word.

She didn't look at me.

He looked at his plate.

"More coffee?" I asked.

"Nothing that concerns you right now."

"It concerns me if it has my address on it."

Daniel finally looked up.

"Mom, let's not do this today."

"Do what, Daniel?

Ask a question in my own home?"

Ashley stood up and pressed her hand flat on the table.

"You want to know?

Fine.

We've already spoken to a lawyer.

There are legal options when a family member is no longer capable of managing a property responsibly."

The room went very quiet.

"And who," I said slowly, "decided I was no longer capable?"

She smiled.

It wasn't kind.

"Your doctor, actually."
