I didn't scream.
I didn't cry.
I walked straight to Liam, pulled him out from under that table, and held him so tight I could feel every rib.
He smelled like he hadn't been bathed in days.
"Mommy," he whispered.
Just that one word.
Like he wasn't sure I was real.
I stood up slowly and looked at Jeffrey.
"How long has he been like this?"
Jeffrey finally looked at me.
"He's dramatic.
You always babied him."
The mistress laughed from the sofa.
"He throws fits.
We had to keep him separate so he wouldn't upset the baby."
Noelle didn't even turn around.
I looked at my son's arms.
There were marks I hadn't noticed at first.
"What are these?"
Jeffrey stood up.
"Don't start, Elena."
"I said — what are THESE?"
The room went quiet.
Then Liam pressed his face against my neck and whispered something I almost didn't hear.
A name.
Not Jeffrey's name.
Not Noelle's.
Someone else had been in this house.
