Chapter 2: What Gerald Knew

The stranger's name was Gerald.

He said he had worked for my father's legal firm for over twenty years.

"Your father didn't trust Ethan's family," he told me.

"He left a record.

Everything."

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I asked him why he waited so long to contact me.

"Because you weren't safe until you left that house."

I sat in my car outside the airport, the suitcase on the seat beside me, and I opened the contract again.

Clause 7.

My father's estate.

My inheritance.

A transfer condition tied to my marriage — specifically, to my signature on a property document I had never seen before.

I had never signed it.

But someone had.

My signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

Except I hadn't written it.

Gerald sent one more message before going quiet.

"Check who witnessed the signature.

That person is still inside your house."

I looked at the witness line.

Barbara.

My phone rang.

Ethan's name on the screen.

I stared at it.

Gerald's last words were still on my screen: *"Don't answer until you've read page nine."*

I turned to page nine.

And everything I thought I understood about my marriage collapsed in a single paragraph.

---

What was on page nine — and did Ethan know?

The full truth is more shocking than anything Barbara said that morning.
